No: as of October 2026 there is no solid evidence that llms.txt improves your visibility in Google Search or in AI answers. An Ahrefs analysis found that 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026, and Google says its Search does not use these files. It still costs almost nothing to publish one, and it can help coding assistants that read documentation.
This article collects what the 2026 data and official guidance say, what an llms.txt file looks like, and what to do instead if your goal is to be cited by AI assistants. We checked every figure against its source on October 7, 2026.
What Is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text (Markdown) file placed at the root of a website, for example /llms.txt. It gives AI systems a short summary of the site and a curated list of the most useful pages, so that a language model does not have to work through navigation, scripts and ads. It is a proposal, not an official web standard like robots.txt.
What the 2026 Data Shows
| Finding | Source | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests | Ahrefs server-log analysis, May 2026 | About 137,000 domains analyzed |
| llms.txt adoption grew 8.8 times in 12 months | Originality.ai tracking of more than 3 million websites | 36,120 llms.txt files found in May 2026 |
| Google Search does not use llms.txt | Google Search Central documentation update, June 2026 | Files will neither help nor harm visibility in Google Search |
The two data points tell the same story: many sites publish the file, but almost nobody requests it. Adoption is growing quickly, while use is not. Sources: PPC Land summary of the Ahrefs and Originality.ai data and Techwyse on Google’s documentation update.
What Google Says
In June 2026 Google updated its Search Central documentation to say that site owners do not need to create machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its generative AI features, because Google Search itself does not use them. Keeping an llms.txt file will not harm or help your visibility or rankings in Google Search. You are free to maintain one for other services that use these files.
Where llms.txt Can Still Help
- Coding assistants and developer tools. Reports from SEO publishers say tools such as Cursor, Claude Code and other agents can fetch llms.txt for documentation, so it can be useful for developer docs and APIs.
- Future-proofing. If AI search platforms start to use the file, you will already have it. This is a bet, not a proven benefit.
- A clean summary of your site. Writing one forces you to decide which pages matter most.
Should You Create an llms.txt File?
If your goal is to rank in Google or to be cited in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity answers, do not expect llms.txt to move the needle. If you can create one in under an hour, there is little downside, and it is worth it for documentation sites. We publish one on maslonlabs.com ourselves and do not claim it affects our visibility.
